TIME TO GET ANGRY AND FIGHT THE LIES IN THE LEGISLATURE

    Feb 2010

    From NMOHVA:

It has been a tough week for both OHV-positive memorials. It is time to tell you in plain words that the anti-OHV crowd are telling LIES about the memorials to the committees. The lobbyist for the League of Conservation Voters told one House Committee that the current OHV Law is only about law enforcement and not about safety, so there is no reason for the Safety Memorial. That is a flat-out LIE. Our lobbyists were at the committee meeting and heard it. The Conservation Voters lobbyist told this lie just as the committee was adjourning. Our people were not allowed to respond. The lie created enough confusion that the committee tabled the Memorial instead of voting on it.

Board members Mark Winscott and Chris Johnson have been talking to individual Senators and Representatives. It's clear that misinformation is being spread. One representative suspected that ATV safety training made hidden profits for dealers. One senator refused to support the Safety Memorial because he believed the state would be paying for the training. Who do you think told them that?

BIG CHANGES ON THE SENATE SIDE: Prior to the start of the session, Senator Phil Griego agreed to sponsor the Memorials. Wording was even changed at his request. Last week he suddenly backed out. He refused to introduce the Senate Memorial for the OHV Study and withdrew support for the Safety Memorial he had already introduced. This means SJM 31 ( that was the Safety Memorial) is DEAD.

Fortunately, Senator Sue Wilson-Beffort agreed to sponsor both Memorials. They have been re-introduced in the Senate as SJM 55 (OHV Study) and SJM 56 (Safety). Both Memorials go to the Senate Rule Committee for their first hearing. We will let you know when that Committee will hear them.

HOUSE SIDE: Representative Don Tripp is sponsoring and actively supporting HJM 31 (OHV Study) and HJM 32 (Safety)

TIME IS SHORT, WE CAN'T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU!

To keep the memorials alive they must get through the Committees. If they get tabled or voted down, they die, and the House and Senate never get to vote on them. Members of both House committees tell us they are hearing from people against our memorials, and they are not getting the calls and emails from OUR SIDE in support the memorials. Representatives and Senators support legislation if the majority of their constituents support it. If they don't hear from us, they aren't going to support us. So let them hear it!

The Safety Memorial (HJM 32) was tabled (frozen) by the House Transportation and Public Works committee on Tuesday. We hope it will be reconsidered this week. The OHV Study Memorial (HJM 31) was also tabled by the House Energy and Natural Resources committee on Saturday.

Call them today. If you can't reach them by telephone, email them. It is especially important that they hear from us if we live in their district. Here is who to contact:

    Senate Rules Committee

Senator Linda M. Lopez 986-4737 No email listed.

    Senator Peter Wirth 986-4276 peter.wirth@nmlegis.gov

    Senator Michael S. Sanchez 986-4727 senatormssanchez@aol.com

    Senator Kent L. Cravens 986-4391 klcravens@alphagraphics.com

Tell the Senators that we support both SJM 55 and SJM 56.

We are also still trying to get HJM 32 reconsidered. Please call the following committee members and tell them that we want HJM 32 taken off the table and re-considered with the CORRECT information:

It has been a tough week because the legislators are hearing more from the opposition than they are hearing from us. Now is the time to be heard! Call today!
