Default four runner vs jeep / other vehicle! help!!!

I currently have a stock 99' toyota four runner sr5 2.7L v6 all stock. I've decided to start getting serious about off-roading but im not sure if i should build up my four runner or sell it to get another vehicle. I've never seen a four runner my year / make modded in NM so i was thinking that could be a good thing as its unique or a band thing as in its a waste... What do you guys think? my budget isnt too huge however i could work around the 5-6g mark for another vehicle and go from there for mods. So build it? get a wrangler / other vehicle? any advice / suggestions is appreciated!

    What's a four runner? And if it's 2.7L it's going to be a 4 cylinder.
4runner's make good wheelers, the issue you'll run into is that it's IFS. Man came with a factor E-locker as well. What would this vehicle be used for? DD/Mall cruisin/flower beds? Hardcore rock crawling? Mud bogging?

then im mistaken on the liters cuz it is a 6cyl for sure. It would be used for a little bit of everything honestly. It will be an everyday driver as well though.

What type of off roading do you want to get into? Serious rockcrawling? General purpose? Go fast?

The 4Runner is a good platform for a general purpose off road use but is limited by its IFS for any serious rockcrawling. There is a good amount of aftermarket support for 4runners such as All Pro Offroad (armor, suspension), Budbuilt (skidplates), Total Chaos (suspension), Slee Offroad (OME lift kits, bumpers).

Add some gearing, ARB lockers, small lift, bigger tires, bumpers and rock sliders and you would have a great start to a capable 4Runner. You can also add performance mods like bigger brakes and a supercharger.

There used to be a white 4runner around town that is built nicely for general off road use but it has been relocated, Im sure the owner will give some good advice once he sees this

I would say if it is in good mechanical condition I would keep it and build it up vs buying something else.

...And it would be a 3.4L

There are a few people wheeling 4Runners in and around Albuquerque. Steve Hunt (Hunt4Steve.Com) and Albuquerque Jim (albuquerquejim's photos and albums on webshots) are two that immediately come to mind.

Here is one that is for sale locally, might be easier to buy something already built than to dump a bunch of money into yours.

To get back to your original question, I think that these vehicles make excellent platforms for daily driving, some high speed dirt road fun, and moderately challenging trails. Their larger dimensions, indepedent front suspension, and less aftermarket support make them less desireable than a Wrangler for serious rockcrawling though. I guess it all comes down to what you want to do.
