Default Been thinkin about YJ stretchin...

Hey all. Since my pile has been sitting so long I've kinda toyed with different things I'd like to do with it before she's trail-worthy again and the one idea that keeps coming back is STRETCH. I've done some reading (JF, Pirate, etc.) and it seems like the popular thing to do is relocate hanagers and rock springs from a) XJ, b) Chevy, c)Ford F-150, or d) other random crapola.

I guess my question is why don't people do some frame work, relocate hangers, and recycle YJ springs??? I put a 3.5" Black Diamond Suspension kit on the YJ about 4 years ago and don't really understand why I can't use those springs. Maybe I am completely missing some key bit of information. Anyone care to beat some sense into me? Why can't I use my springs?

    Thanks!

You can use your springs, but the benefit to using something like Cherokee springs is that you don't have to relocate the front spring hangers, and a longer spring will allow greater articulation and generally ride smoother.

What are you planning on doing about the fuel tank?

because some xj/chevy/ford springs have offset centerpins. and are longer.

typically you put the short end of the spring towards the near end of the vehicle. (short end forward for front springs, short end rearward for rear springs), and relocate the center of vehicle hangers (or shackle mounts) to accomodate the longer springs. this gives you a spring that stretches your wheelbase, and increases your flex, with little frame mods.

could you extend your frame and use your existing springs? sure.

Are you stretching the whole thing or just the wheel base?

I love this build - it's well thought out:

I can't believe you didn't even tell me you're thinking about getting your Jeep finished! That hurts man! lol You should listen and get different springs so I can buy your lift!

I'm looking at wheelbase only. Yeah, what you guys are saying makes sense. Everyone goes with longer springs that have the offset center pin. I get that. But I'm not nervous about relocating the front hangers and I think i can expect some pretty decent performance form the springs I have now in conjunction with the RE shackles so I guess those considerations aren't enough for me to want to go with different leafs.

@Swissie - Dude... I'm ALWAYS thinking about working on the jeep... It's just that I'm too damn busy working on YOURS. Prick. :flipoff: and I'm not selling you my lift. Die. Or go buy your own, lol!

@Dirty Harry - I haven't exactly decided but clearly the stock tank will go. Have any suggestions? I've seen a couple different options and I'm not opposed to ditching the tumbler seat to locate a fuel cell.

I think that the most elegant solution is a Genright tank:

JEEP PARTS | JEEP ACCESSORIES | JEEP BUMPERS | Gas Tanks

I see a lot of guys running these RCI tanks behind the rear seat though:

Don't stretch the YJ. It'll just take up more space under that car port and make it harder for Jeff to get that busted Supra out of the yard and for me to get my busted station wagon out too : X

Greg, your input is invaluable. Thanks. hahaha!!

I was looking at the Genright stuff earlier this week. Very nice. VERY expensive. Good thing my build is at such a slow pace that I won't have to make any decisions for the next 14 years lol!
