Do your research on that dana 35 before you put gears and a locker in it. If you want just a jeep to put around and explore in my opinion is keep the 31s and just do a suspension lift kit. My opinion.
I thought I had a good idea on what I wanted to do to get my yj ready for the trails, but I am more confused than ever. The jeep has a 4.2 l and a 5 speed man. It has 3:07 gears and 31" tires. I want good trail explorer to start. I am not ready to climb 20' rock walls yet. I have some fund to get this started, but I have heard so many different ideas. Please help me.

what you have is a good start. If you just want to some mild stuff, you should look at getting a slight larger tire, and gears. You cant go too big on the tire with out starting to get into replacing the rear axle. My old '97 grand cherokee running 3.73 gears and 31" tire would get me into the Rio Puerco and do some small obstacles.
I did look at some other options other than the dana35. I understand that it is weak. Is there any cheaper options other than replace the axel?
Nothing wrong with wheeling a D35 if that's what you've got. Just remember it's back there and don't do nuts with the gas pedal. You'll be fine.
Fine for mild wheeling. It'll get you into and out of the Puerco. Tag along on a few trips out there and see what others are doing and have done. Learn from what others have spent their hard earned money on before you spend yours. How deep your pockets are is "ALWAYS" the limiting factor with Jeeps. Once you start getting brave you absolutely will begin to break things, so consider the consequences before you charge up that next hill on the trail. Research and patience will serve you well if you are just getting started.
