    Default TRE Tech Tip

I recently had to make a few changes to my steering setup. Using a pickle fork to remove the tie rod ends (TREs) usually results in torn boots. Well 2 of the grease boots were pretty bad to start with so when I popped out the TREs those 2 boots were trashed.

I made some new 'boots' to protect the TRE from dirt. While they are not as good as the boots that come with the TREs they are stronger and offer better protection then nothing.

I found an old rubber mudflap and used a 2.5" holesaw to cut a disc out of the thicker part of the flap. Next I used a 3/4" holesaw to cut the center circle to fit over the TRE. Put the disc around the TRE and then reinstall. Not the prettiest but it was cheap (free!) and does its job. I considered buying a rod of polyurethane and cutting the discs out of but I couldnt find it cheap enough.

Yeah I know but I needed it right away plus I dont have to worry about tearing boots again and having to keep replacing them. I actually had 3 new boots that are on my trailspare TREs and I think for my use these rubber discs will work better in the long run.
