Engine Rebuild for 1968 Bus

Well, I couldn't wait any longer so i decided to tear into the engine i picked up for the bus. VW engines are pretty simple to work on plus the following books are life savers to have if you have vw's.

Bentley manual for your specific VW
John Muir's How to keep your Volkswagen alive, a manual of step by step procedures for the complete idiot.
and also Tom Wilson's How to rebuild your VW aircooled engine.

A little about John Muir. John was a decendent of the famous naturalist John Muir and also a aerospace engineer for Lockheed. He dropped out of the engineering world to open a garage in Taos, NM specializing in VW's. He died in 1977 of a brain tumor.

Here is a before pic of the engine

Starting the tear down.

The heads were toast. one is trashed beyond rebuild.

The pistons were next, and they will also be trashed.

and this is how it looks now. i still have to remove the oil pump and split the case.

That's all for today

By look alone I cant tell, 13, 15, 16? I did a 16 to 1776 with a matched pair of 44 IDF's and a SCAT counterweighted and balanced crank/rods some years ago, thing was a screamer, I highly recommend... 1835's and 1921's tend to have more cooling and oiling issues but the 1776 is mild enough that the doghouse keeps up just fine. You gonna bump it up or just rebuild?
