Since I was up early and evidently pretty bored.... Is this still an issue? Anywayz...

A quick search yielded Jeep Computer codes (OBDI & OBDII) - Jeep Cherokee Forum

Breaks down the ODBI and ODBII codes for Cherokees, tells you how to get them without a scan tool, etc.... Since yours is a 92 yours is an ODBI, as ODBII started in 96.....

As you described. you are getting code 55, you better double check, 55 is "End of Codes"... If there is nothing preceding that code, then your system either doesn't detect any issues, is fautly, or operator error....

I love it when folks post to a BB and ask, "whats this noise" as if we all imagine the same sound in our heads and could possibly e-diagnose it, sure theres a handfull of things that "could" cause a knocking sound but you really need more data i.e. any smoke, miles, take off the elbow while its's running, do you get vacuum or blow-by, oil consumption, oil prssure at startup, is there any oil, compression/leakdown, coolant condition and purity, bubbles in the coolant?? etc.etc.etc.

Get your self an FSM, Haynes, and a Chilton, niether tends to be 100% complete and sometimes conflict...

Ive only been able to accurately diagnose 100% 1 issue my whole life by sound alone, I left a 1/2 in ratchet on the crank bolt, as soon as I turned it over there was a sound I could instantly identify as a 1/2 ratchet bouncing arround under the hood, very distinctive... Good luck...
